NACIN Chennai is the zonal training institute to train the officers of CBIC in the State of Tamil Nadu & Union Territory of Puducherry. Started in the year 1974, it is one of the oldest zonal training institutes of NACIN.
In the early 70s, the Chennai Regional Training Centre (RTC), headed by a Deputy Director, began functioning from rented premises of a few hundred square feet. Subsequently, in 1980, another institute by name Chennai Regional Centre of Customs Staff College started functioning at Custom House, Chennai to train the Probationers of Indian Revenue Service (C&CE).
In 1990s, both the Regional Centre of Customs Staff College and the Regional Training Centre were brought under the aegis of the Southern Regional Centre of National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics (NACEN) headed by an Additional Director General. Consequent to implementation of GST, the name of the institute was changed to NACIN (National Academy of Customs, Indirect taxes and Narcotics). In the year 2012, the academic premises of NACIN Chennai was shifted to the present rented premises at Plot No.3/86 E, Ambattur Industrial Estate, AIEMA Road, Chennai - 58.

The academy spans over an area of about 18,270 sq. ft., has two Lecture halls (with 70 and 90 seats), a Conference-cum-Library Hall (which can be used as an additional training hall for 30 trainees) and a canteen (with a capacity of about 60). It has parking space, uninterrupted power supply (10KVA), diesel generator sets for power back up apart from open lawns in the first and second floors, thereby providing an excellent ambience for the training academy. Recently, a faculty lounge has been created at the 2nd floor of the campus to accommodate guest faculty during session breaks.

A library with more than 2000 books is available at the campus. The library is replenished with the latest manuals on Customs, Indirect Taxes and allied laws from time to time besides other fiction and non fiction books on various titles in English, Hindi and Tamil.
Canteen
NACIN Canteen is operated by a caterer on contract basis. It caters lunch, tea and coffee for the trainees and staff on nominal cost. There is no commercial supply of food in the canteen for outsiders. Food items are prepared only on need basis. The caterer will provide lunch/ refreshments only if there is sufficient number of trainees opting for the same. A separate WhatsApp group would be created for this purpose and order will have to be placed in a Google Form so as to facilitate the caterer. The caterer will post a survey poll every evening and based on the number of trainees opting for lunch in the canteen, he would provide lunch on the following day. The caterer will communicate well in advance if he is unable to provide lunch/refreshment on any particular day. There is ZERO Tolerance for ‘Food wastage’.
